I finished writing on my tablet, gave everything a quick proofread, pressed my thumb on the screen, and pressed send. Blondie was watching me like a cat about to pounce on a space rat.

“Inspector, would you like a drink? On the house.”

It turns out she actually goes by the name Blondie. I ignored her and stood up to leave.

“I’m on duty, Blondie. You know better than to offer me a drink.”

“Never stops any of your uniforms,” she shot back.

I stopped and turned my head, grinning at Blondie. “Thanks for letting me know. That’ll be coming to a halt. Check your tablet. I just messaged you.”

Still grinning, I turned to leave.

I almost made it out of The Gold Mine before I heard Blondie let out a screech. One of those shrieks that makes the hair on your arms stand up, your eyes squint, and your shoulders shrug.

Ten meters was as far as I got before razor sharp nails dug into the flesh of my right bicep. I could feel the honed edges through the thick sleeve of my jacket.

“Just who do you think you are?”

I turned to find Blondie standing there behind me. Gone was her ordinarily pale, smooth complexion. In its place were rough patches of red skin on both cheeks. Both eyes were bulging slightly, tiny red veins making their appearance in the otherwise porcelain orbs. Bright red lipstick, the color of oxygenated blood, was smeared on her teeth.

“Inspector Thomas Sullivan.”

Blondie stomped her foot as she placed both hands on her hips.

“You know what I mean!”

"I believe you are well aware of the laws on this station. You'll find I've actually been quite lenient if you read everything carefully. Have the CCTV, which is required by law, repaired and running in two days and I'll drop the fine. As for the rest, pay the fines and stop letting working girls pick up johns in your place. Don't serve minors, and shut down the card game in your back room."

“How much?”

“How much what?”

“I was paying ten percent, gross. How much do you want?”

“You don’t want to add bribing a public official to your list of charges, Blondie. Just get a new CCTV, pay your fines, and take care of the rest.”

I could feel her eyes burning a hole in the center of my back as I strolled through the concourse, watching the inhabitants of Delta 489 go about their business.

It wouldn’t be long now. In fact, I was pretty sure I’d learn who had killed my predecessor as well.
